Thousand Oaks Oak Tree Trimming Rules: What Homeowners Should Know

Thousand Oaks earned its name from the native oaks that shade its neighborhoods — and the city works hard to protect them. If you own property in the Conejo Valley and are thinking about trimming or removing an oak, here is what you need to know first.

Protected oaks and the city ordinance

Thousand Oaks protects native oaks (such as coast live oak and valley oak) under its Oak Tree Preservation ordinance. In many cases, pruning beyond a certain amount or removing a protected oak requires a city permit and a report from a qualified arborist. Cutting first and asking later can lead to fines, so it pays to confirm before work begins.

How much can you prune?

Healthy oaks should generally have no more than about a quarter of their live canopy removed at once, and cuts should follow proper arborist technique to avoid disease. Over-pruning (“lion-tailing”) weakens the tree and can violate city rules.

Wildfire and dead limbs

Dead, diseased, and hazardous limbs can usually be removed for safety and defensible space, but a protected oak still needs care. We help Thousand Oaks homeowners balance wildfire safety with the city’s oak protections.
