When the first winter storm arrives, it’s much harder to deal with a branch hanging over the driveway or a tree that already has a visible split. Fall is a good time to walk around your property, notice changes in your trees, and decide what needs professional attention.
NOAA reports that El Niño is strengthening ahead of the 2026–27 winter. That does not tell us exactly how much rain or wind any one Southern California property will receive. It does make this a sensible time to check trees before the weather changes.
Start With the Areas You Use Every Day
Look at trees near your home, driveway, walkways, parking areas, and outdoor seating. Are branches touching the roof or growing into the space vehicles and people need? Has a limb broken and remained caught in the canopy?
Tree trimming can remove dead or damaged branches and create clearance where growth interferes with the property. The right cuts depend on the tree’s species, condition, and structure. Trimming every tree the same way—or removing large amounts of healthy growth just because winter is approaching—can cause problems of its own.
Watch for Changes in the Tree
From the ground, look for newly broken limbs, hanging branches, visible splits, or a tree that has begun leaning. Also notice changes around the base, such as disturbed soil or exposed roots. These signs deserve a closer look, especially when the tree stands near a building or an area people use.
A professional assessment can help determine whether pruning addresses the concern or whether the tree needs a different plan. No trimming job can make a tree stormproof, but addressing specific problems before a storm is more useful than waiting for damage.
Plan the Work Around the Property
For homeowners, that may mean clearing a driveway and reviewing branches over the house. For an HOA or commercial property, it may include shared walkways, parking spaces, entrances, and areas used by residents or customers.
At Rancho Landscape & Tree Care, we look at the tree and its surroundings before recommending work. We can discuss which branches need attention, how crews will access the area, and what cleanup is included in the estimate.
Schedule a Tree Review Before the Rush
If you’ve noticed a hanging limb, crowded growth, or a tree you’re concerned about, contact Rancho before winter weather arrives. Tell us where the tree stands and what you’ve observed. We’ll arrange a visit, discuss your options, and provide a free estimate for the work we recommend.
