When Does a Palm Tree Need to Come Out?
A palm usually needs removing when it is dying, when it has grown into a roofline or a power line, or when it sits where you are planning a new patio, pool or driveway. Our palm tree removal service takes the whole palm down safely, then deals with the stump and the green waste so the spot is ready for whatever comes next.
How We Take a Palm Tree Down
Every removal starts with a look at what is under and around the palm. A palm standing in an open front yard can often be dropped in one piece. One leaning over a roof, a pool, a fence or a neighbor’s yard is taken apart from the top in sections and lowered on a rope, so nothing lands where it should not. When buildings or utility lines are close, that rope down is part of the plan from the start and is written into the estimate.
Our crews follow ANSI safety standards and use equipment matched to the height of the palm, from climbing gear to a bucket truck or crane on the larger jobs. Palms carry a lot of weight in the crown and the trunk is dense with water, which is why the cutting sequence matters more than raw speed.
Dying, Diseased or in the Way
Not every tired-looking palm has to go. When a palm is struggling we first check for nutrient deficiencies, Fusarium wilt or lethal yellowing. If the palm can be kept, a good palm skinning and trimming service is usually the better answer. If it is confirmed to be dying, removing it before it drops fronds or fails is the safer choice.
Other palms are healthy but simply in the wrong place. Queen palms that drop seed and fruit across a driveway, fan palms that have outgrown a narrow side yard, and palms standing where a homeowner wants to build are all common reasons for a planned removal.
Recent Palm Removals in the San Fernando Valley and Beyond
A few recent jobs show the range of the work. In Northridge we removed four palm trees along with a stump in a single day. In Van Nuys the crew took out three palms and an ash tree from a residential lot, and in Santa Clarita we removed two mature queen palms because of the mess they were making.
Stump Grinding and Haul-Away
Cutting the palm down and removing the stump are two separate operations. A palm stump left in the ground stays in the way of planting and paving for years, so most customers have us grind the stump while the crew is already on site. The estimate also covers hauling the fronds and trunk sections away. If you are comparing quotes, our guide to what sets palm tree removal cost in Los Angeles explains what should be included.
Permits and Protected Trees
Cities in Los Angeles and Ventura counties set their own rules on which trees can be removed and when a permit is needed. We confirm the position for your address before the work is booked. For neutral background on when a palm is worth keeping, the Tree Care Industry Association’s consumer resources are a useful place to start.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The palm is taken down in sections from the top and each piece is lowered on a rope, so the roof or pool is protected. It takes longer than felling, and the estimate reflects that.
Sometimes. We check for nutrient problems, Fusarium wilt and lethal yellowing first. If the palm can recover, trimming and skinning may be enough. If it is dying, removal is the safer option.
Stump grinding is a separate service we offer with every removal. Most customers book it for the same visit because the equipment is already there.
Hauling the fronds and trunk sections off the property is part of the estimate, so the area is left clean.
It depends on your city and sometimes on the street. We check the rules for your address before the job is scheduled.
We remove the palms found across Southern California, including Washington fan palms, Phoenix and date palms, queen palms, king palms, pygmy palms and windmill palms.
